You’re probably thinking, “Oh Wow! I’m going to be reading some action-packed spy story that will keep me on the edge of my seat until the end and then BAM! – a surprise ending!”
You’re wrong. This is a REAL life spy story. It’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.
When I first arrive at my office in Jamaica, NY, I start with coffee – strong, black, and lots of it. Over the years, with so many surveillance assignments, my sleeping schedules been altered so much that I don’t sleep as well as I used to. I need the kick start of caffeine in the morning. Once I get it, I spring to life.
As I sit at my desk, drinking my coffee, I see a large plastic empty peanut container sitting near me. One of my other Private Investigators had finished off the day before and left there. Roasted and lightly salted – my favorite. I think to myself, “that would make a great pee-jar for when I’m on my next surveillance case in Corona later today when I’m sitting in my car for hours on end.”
That’s the thought that only a private detective (and maybe a long haul truck driver) would have. It’s a cheating spouse case. I had just finished a child support surveillance case in Middle Village, NY, a day earlier, and that jar had already served its purpose and had been disposed of. This one can take its place today. I do a lot of child custody surveillances as well and know they can go on for a while—no time for bathroom breaks when I’m on the job. I never leave until it’s done.
The phone rings. The guy on the other end is a landlord from Woodside, Queens, and needs help trying to locate an ex-tenant who has skipped out before paying his rent. He needs the guy found so that the legal papers can be served and the landlord can recoup the money he’s owed. That is just one of the many types of missing person cases I handle. Sometimes people call looking to find their spouse to serve divorce papers, other times people are looking for family members they have lost touch with and haven’t seen in a long time. There are many scenarios to locate someone and I’ve either done or been asked to do most of them in my career.
I finish the call with the landlord and I email him the contract to sign while he sends me the payment through PayPal. Once I have both completed, I put him on the calendar for tomorrow.
My mid-day appointment should be arriving at any minute. It is a woman that needs a background check done. We need to discuss some details and take care of the contract and payment. It should be a fairly quick meeting. After that, I will head out to my marriage infidelity surveillance in Corona with my “new” pee-jar in tow. I always try to get to my cases early so that I can get an optimal observational position for the best possible results.
This is my real life “spy story”. Somehow I don’t think this will be turned into the next great detective blockbuster movie, but who knows? “Just call me Bland. James Bland”
